Radiotherapy

Radiation therapy, also called radiation therapy, is a type of cancer treatment. It uses intense energy beams to eliminate cancer cells. Radiation therapy often uses X-rays. But there are other types of radiation therapy, including proton beam therapy.

Modern radiation therapy methods are precise, directing beams of radiation directly at the cancer site precisely while protecting healthy tissue from high doses of radiation.

Radiation therapy can be given inside or outside your body. External beam radiation therapy is the most common type. This treatment uses a large device called a linear accelerator that directs high-energy beams to precise locations in the body.

Radiation therapy placed inside the body is called brachytherapy, and it is a common cancer treatment. During this treatment, the doctor places a small, solid implant at or near the site of the cancer.

Radiation therapy kills cells by destroying the genetic material that controls cell growth and division. Healthy cells may be damaged along with cancer cells during radiation therapy. But healthy cells can repair themselves more easily than cancer cells. The goal of radiation therapy is to treat cancer while harming the least possible number of healthy cells.
